In this talk, supersonic turbulent flow passing a backward facing step will be studied by using direct numerical simulation in order to explore fundamental flow physics associated with this configuration. An in-house high-order DNS code was used with low-dissipation monotonicity-preservation scheme to ensure energy spectrum being captured accurately. Mach 2.9 incoming flows at three Reynolds numbers of 20,000, 40,000, and 80,000 have been considered and results were qualitatively compared with test at higher Reynolds number. It was found that the separation bubble size reduces with the increase of Reynolds number. Along two streamlines, kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress variations have shown a short plateau and a longer plateau, respectively, indicating different evolution processes. This has been confirmed by instantaneous streamwise velocity fluctuations. Other noticeable phenomena were also observed, including horseshoe vortex and Gӧrtler vortex.

报告人简介:

Dr Yufeng Yao received his BENG from NUDT in 1984, MSc from NUAA in 1987, and PhD from Glasgow University in 1997, respectively. He is currently Professor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol and also leads the Engineering Modelling and Simulation research group which explores complex engineering design, analysis and control relevant issues occurred in practical engineering systems. Prof Yao’s research interest and expertise include direct and large-eddy simulations of turbulent flow in complex geometries, transitional and turbulent flows in shock/boundary-layer interactions and the RANS modelling of single- and multi-phase flows and heat transfer for industrial applications such as turbo-machinery, automotive and built environment. His research covers various complex flow problems relevant to aerospace, turbo-machinery, automotive, and built environment.
